Who Are We?
The Davis Piano Quartet members share a common musical education background; all are products of the University of Montevallo's highly-acclaimed music department. The ensemble is named, in fact, for the late Dr. Maxine Couch Davis, Professor Emerita of Music at Montevallo.
Beulah Askins Fowler holds the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Montevallo, MA from the University of Alabama, and BA in art and english from Athens State College. She did advanced piano study with Lucien Stark at George Peabody College and organ study with Ken Turvey of Huntsville. Beulah has had an outstanding career in choral music in the Jefferson County and Huntsville School systems, where her choirs consistently received superior ratings in state and regional competitions. She was also Assistant Professor of Music at Athens State College, where she taught piano, theory, music literature and pedagogy, and has taught music education at the University of Montevallo, as well as serving as an adjudicator and clinician for state festivals.
Cheryl Kiker Walls currently teaches music at the Joseph S. Bruno Montessori Academy in Birmingham, following twenty-eight years at Vestavia Hills Elementary-East. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Montevallo and holds Level III Orff certification. She was Teacher of the Year in Vestavia Hills City Schools in 1993 and Alabama Music Educators Outstanding Music Educator in 1994. Cheryl has served as director of children's choirs, and as pianist and organist, in a number of churches in the Birmingham area, and on staff at Fine Arts Week at Sumatanga. She has presented workshops throughout Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, has taught elementary music materials and methods courses at Birmingham Southern College, and has served as cooperating teacher for more than 100 student teachers.
Carolyn Duncan received both her undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Music, organ performance) and her master's degree (MME, piano) from the University of Montevallo. Though she spends her days as a partner in one of Birmingham's leading corporate law firms, she prefers to think of music as her real life.
Sandra Boykin Nelson earned her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at Montevallo, then completed advanced study with Robert Goldsand and Zenon Fishbein at the Manhattan School of Music. Sandy is a noted performer and piano teacher in the Birmingham musical community, having served as staff accompanist at Montevallo, and taught in the prep divisions at Montevallo, Samford University and Birmingham Southern College, as well as maintaining one of the premier private piano studios in Birmingham.
